Brunei begins fasting tomorrow

By command of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, the country will observe the fasting month of Ramadan on Wednesday. This was announced Monday evening by the Syariah High Court Judge, Dato Seri Setia Haji Metussin. The announcement broadcast on both radio and television was made after the new moon of Ramadhan was not sighted by a team of government officials earlier Monday evening.

The sighting of the new moon of Ramadhan involved Syarie Judges and officials from the Syariah Courts, the State Judiciary Department, the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Survey Department.

They were at several vantage points in the country to sight the new moon of Ramadhan. The nightly Terawikh prayers will begin tonight while the Bertedarus will provide the highlights of Ramadhan nights at all mosques and suraus in the country.

Working hours at all government ministries and departments during the Fasting Month of Ramadhan meanwhile will be from eight in the morning to two in the afternoon. Working hours for daily-paid employees should be an hour shorter from their normal working time. (4th October 2005)
