His Majesty pays last respects to late Perak Sultan

HIS Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam yesterday paid his last respects to the late His Majesty Paduka Seri Sultan Azlan Muhibbuddin Shah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Yussuf Izzuddin Shah Ghafarullahu-lah, the 34th Sultan of Perak Darul Ridzuan at the Throne Room of Istana Iskandariah, Kuala Kangsar, Perak Darul Ridzuan.

Accompanying His Majesty was His Royal Highness Prince Haji Sufri Bolkiah.

Upon arrival at Istana Iskandariah in Kuala Kangsar, His Majesty signed a condolence book and later paid his last respects to the late Sultan of Perak Darul Ridzuan.

The late Sultan Azlan Shah was the 34th Sultan of Perak Darul Ridzuan and the 9th Yang Di-Pertuan Agong. He passed away at 1.30pm on Wednesday, May 28 at the National Heart Institute in Kuala Lumpur at the age of 86.

The late Sultan Azlan Shah was laid to rest at Bukit Chandan Royal Mausoleum at Kuala Kangsar.

The late Sultan of Perak Darul Ridzuan left behind Her Majesty Raja Permaisuri of Perak Darul Ridzuan, Tuanku Bainun binti Mohd Ali; Duli Yang Maha Mulia Sultan Dr Nazrin Shah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Azlan Muhibbuddin Shah, Sultan of Perak Darul Ridzuan; and three princesses, YAM Raja Dato’ Seri Azureen binti Sultan Azlan Muhibbuddin Shah; YAM Raja Eleena binti Sultan Azlan Muhibbuddin Shah; and YAM Raja Yong Sofia binti Sultan Azlan Muhibbuddin Shah.

During his reign, the late Sultan Azlan Shah became the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong. He was installed as the Crown Prince on July 1, 1983 when he was the Chief Justice of Malaysia.

On February 3, 1984, the late Sultan Azlan Shah resigned as Chief Justice of Malaysia and became the Sultan of Perak following the demise of Sultan Idris Shah and was proclaimed as the 34th Sultan of Perak.

On December 9, 1985, the late Sultan Azlan Shah was officially crowned as Sultan Perak Darul Ridzuan.

The late Sultan of Perak Darul Ridzuan studied at Government English School, Batu Gajah now known as Sultan Yussuf Secondary School and pursued his studies in Law at University of Nottingham, UK and obtained a Bachelor of Law in 1953. On November 23, 1954, the late Sultan Azlan Shah was certified as a member of the English Bar by The Honorable Society of Lincoln’s Inn.

Also accompanying His Majesty were the Minister of Finance II at the Prime Minister’s Office, Pehin Orang Kaya Laila Setia Dato Seri Setia Awg Hj Abdul Rahman bin Hj Ibrahim. - Borneo Bulletin (30 May 2014)
