by Rafidah Jumat

Her Royal Highness Princess Hajah Masna yesterday officiated S Aisya boutique, which showcases Brunei's intricately woven brocade or 'Kain Tenunan' at the Yayasan Sultan Hj Hassanal Bolkiah shopping complex in the capital.

The boutique also sells exclusive handbags made from traditional woven brocade besides local souvenirs and home decorations. The fabrics are made through a selection of brocades created by Hjh Kadariah and family.

Hjh Kadariah is well-known in the art of traditional brocade making and was the first Principal of the Arts and Handicraft Training Centre. She received the Asean handicrafts award on Oct 8, 1993 and her masterpieces became the collections of royalties and diplomats.

The boutique also displays Brunei's woven brocade made by 'Puteri Tenunan Brunei' who came from Kg Bolkiah 'A' and 'B' in Kg Ayer. They completed a three-year course in weaving at the Yayasan workshop. - Borneo Bulletin (11th December 2010)
