The Royal Brunei Armed Forces (RBAF) yesterday accepted the new 135th intake for 2008 at a ceremony held at Penanjong Garrison in Tutong District. A total of 109 new recruits yesterday began their six-month basic military training at the garrison.
The ceremony's guest of honour was Pehin Datu Pekerma Jaya Colonel Mohd Tawih bin Abdullah, Special Duties Officer at the Ministry of Defence, whose speech focused on a career in the military to motivate the new recruits.
He also highlighted that the "minimum qualification to get into the armed forces has been moved to a higher level, which is two 'O' level passes or equivalent for armed forces cadets, and three passes in 'A' Level subjects or equivalent for the intake of prospective officers". He said that this move was part of the efforts to raise the education level.
Earlier, Major Tarip Bin Hj Karia, Ministry of Defence Recruitment Officer, delivered his welcoming speech. The new recruits and their parents also listened to a briefing from one of the senior officers.
