Sultan grants audience to Chinese general

His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, the Minister of Defence and Supreme Commander of the Royal Brunei Armed Forces, yesterday consented to receive in audience General Cao Gangchuan, the Vice Chairman of the Central Military Commission, State Councillor and Minister of National Defence, China.

Accompanying General Cao Gangchuan were Deputy Minister of Defence Pehin Datu Singamanteri Colonel (Rtd) Dato Seri Paduka Haji Mohammad Yasmin bin Haji Umar, Royal Brunei Armed Forces Commander Pehin Datu Lailaraja Major General Dato Paduka Seri Hj Awg Halbi bin Haji Md Yussof, and the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People's Republic of China to Brunei Darussalam Miss Tong Xiaoling.

Also present at the audience ceremony were Permanent Secretary at the Prime Minister's Office Datin Paduka Dayang Hajah Salbiah binti Haji Sulaiman and Acting Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Defence Pg Dato Paduka Mashor bin Pg Hj Ahmad.

Brunei Darussalam and China signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Military Exchanges on September 12, 2003 in Bandar Seri Begawan. The scope of cooperation includes exchanges of information in defence matters and military exchanges such as trainings and professional courses for personnel.

General Cao Ganchuan and his delegation are in the country on a three-day official visit. He is expected to leave for Jakarta today. - Borneo Bulletin (15th Jan 2008)
