Prince launches Olympic Day Run

HRH Prince Haji Sufri Bolkiah and YAM Pengiran Bini Hjh Faizah yesterday consented to launch the opening of the Olympic Day Run at the Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium.

The royal couple were among hundreds of others who participated in the event.

Prior to the event, Brunei Darussalam Olympic Council President HRH Prince Hj Sufri Bolkiah said, "The Olympic games that began on June 23, 1894 was to bring peace to the world by observing the principles of the Olympics, with sports as a medium."

Six categories were opened for participation: Under 49 (10km); Under 15 (males); Under 15 (females); Women's open; 50 years and above (males); and the special needs category.

The special needs category was further split into six sub-categories: sight impairment open; hearing impairment (men and women); wheelchair open; mentally challenged under 15s; and mentally challenged above 16-year-olds.

The day saw His Royal Highness participating in the men's above 50 category.

Participants were engaged in aerobics prior to the start of the run.

Later in the day, HRH presented prizes to the winners in each category. - Borneo Bulletin (9th July 2007)
