In recognition of World Earth Day 2007, celebrated globally and annually on every April 22, Jerudong International School, with support from Standard Chartered Bank, this week led some practical and fundraising activities, aimed at improving the environment and raising awareness of related key issues.

Yesterday morning meanwhile saw SCB handing over contributions to JIS in the sum of $3,000 during a presentation ceremony held at the school's assembly hall.

Representing the bank was its Chief Executive Officer, Ms Tiew Siew Chuen, and on hand to receive the mock cheque was His Royal Highness Prince Abdul Mateen on behalf of JIS.

According to Ms Tiew Siew Chuen, the SCB donation will be used to fund JIS initiatives in raising more environmental awareness and getting the Sultanate's youths involved.

These include the ongoing tree-planting project, as well as a Tungku Beach cleanup held Thursday afternoon.

Over 200 JIS students and 25 SCB staff members were involved in the clean-up, which kicked off the school's Earth Day programme this year.

The combined efforts of all allowed some headway to be made in an effort of beautifying the area, while it is hoped that the public would ensure that the beach's cleanliness is maintained for future visitors.

During the presentation ceremony, an award in the form of a signed Earth Day T-shirt was also given to Bo Yee Lee, a Year Two student who created the winning design currently used on this year's T-shirts.

The assembly concluded with a short presentation highlighting environmental issues currently faced by the country. - Borneo Bulletin (21st April 2007)
