Silat final marks royal birthday celebrations

The final of the Silat competition in the Belait District was witnessed at the Dewan Bandaran Kuala Belait on Monday evening.

Organised by the National Pencak Silat Association (PERSIB), the event was held in conjunction with the royal birthday celebrations.

Present as guest of honour was Belait District Police Commanding Officer Pengiran Haji Salleh bin Pengiran Haji Chuchu.

In his welcoming speech, chairman of the event Hj Zabidi bin Ali said that the tournament was held to select Belait representatives who will move on to the National Silat competition to be held in the capital from July 20 to 27. This year two teams will represent the district.

He also spoke of the achievements of the Belait District Pencak Silat team, which had won in the male and female Cekak Asli categories. Meanwhile, in the Kuntau section, Belait silat members emerged victorious in the adult female category.

"The victory by the Belait Silat members in the Cekak Asli male and female adult categories was remarkable, as they were champions for two consecutive years," the chairman added.

He also urged silat members to constantly practise high discipline inside and outside the ring.

Five competitions took place in the finals, namely - Cekak Asli (male adult category), Kuntau (male adult category), Kuntau (female adult category) and Tanding Class B and C Male adult.

This year, 60 silat members registered to compete. The preliminary rounds took place from June 29 to July 1 at the Mumong Sports Complex. - Borneo Bulletin (18th July 2007)
