His Majesty sends congratulatory message to Lee

His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam has consented to send a congratulatory message to the Prime Minister of Singapore, Lee Hsien Loong, on his success in the Singapore general election and his party's overall victory.

In the message, His Majesty wished the Singapore prime minister's incoming administration continued success and looked forward to continuing to work together both bilaterally and as regional partners, RTB reported.

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong won a decisive personal mandate in weekend general elections, extending the nearly half-century rule of a party founded by his father, Lee Kuan Yew, AFP reported.

In his first election battle as prime minister, Lee and his People's Action Party (PAP) secured 67 per cent of the popular vote and kept all 82 of the seats it held in the 84-member parliament.

Saturday's vote was widely seen as a referendum on the 54-year-old Lee, a British-educated mathematician and former military officer to fulfill what many saw as his political destiny. - Borneo Bulletin (9th May 2006)
