A cat competition, aimed at instilling affection for cats and showcasing different breeds, was held yesterday morning at the Dewan Bandaran Kuala Belait.

The 'Local and Foreign Cat Competition' was organised by the Belait Women Groups Association (WI) in conjunction with His Majesty's 60th birthday celebrations. The WI has been organising the contest for the past nine years.

Its Organising Chairperson, Dyg Hjh Julia binte Chee, said that the competition hoped to show that keeping cats as pets can be a form of stress relief.

A large number of people flocked to the Dewan Bandaran yesterday to see the prize cats which were put on show after the prize presentation ceremony

There were five categories in the competition, namely, Persian, Siamese, Local, Neutered and Mix Breed. The cats were judged based on fur and health. Extra categories included the Most Photogenic, Biggest, Best Fur and 'Best Of the Best' which automatically made the winning cat the overall winner.

Dyg Hjh Julia said that the judges consisted of veterinarians from the government and private sector.

Apart from the competition, there was a showcase and sale of cat food products and accessories by a local pet store, 'Petlink'.

The winners received trophies, cat foods and accessories which were presented by the chief guest at the event, the wife of the Assistant Belait District Officer, Dyg Asnona binte Hj Chuchu. - Borneo Bulletin (31st July 2006)
