His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam and His Royal Highness Prince Mohamed Bolkiah, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, yesterday made a visit to the Brunei Economic Development Board (BEDB).
Also present were Pehin Dato Paduka Lim Jock Seng, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade II, and Pg Dato Paduka Hj Abu Bakar, Permanent Secretary at the Prime Minister's Office.
During the visit, His Majesty was briefed by BEDB Acting Chairman Mr Timothy Ong and CEO Mr John Perry on how BEDB's strategy and projects would be able to expand employment and business opportunities for the people in the Sultanate.
The briefing focused on the development of Sungai Liang as a world-class industrial park envisaged to house world-scale petrochemical projects such as a methanol plant and a fertiliser plant. The potential of spin-off industries as well as utilities needed to support these activities were also discussed.
Another part of this strategy is to develop Pulau Muara Besar (PMB) as a global port, export processing zone and manufacturing centre. Pulau Muara Besar is also envisaged to host the development of an aluminium smelter and the many spin-off activities related to this industry.
