Night of music and magic
By Azaraimy HH

A brief drizzle Sunday night did nothing to dampen the spirits of roughly 30,000 people who turned up at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium to enjoy the Brunei International Tattoo (BIT) 2006.

The extravagant event involved the participation of over 1,000 military band members and cultural contingents from 13 different countries, namely Brunei Darussalam, Australia, China, Indonesia, Jordan, Malaysia, Oman, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Pakistan and the United Kingdom

The BIT 2006 was the most highly anticipated event of the year. Tens of thousands of tickets were booked and almost immediately snapped up minutes after they were put on sale.

Initially planned as a three-day event, the BIT 2006 was later extended to a fourth day.

Carrying the theme 'Together We Celebrate His Majesty's 60th Birthday,' the tattoo showcased the skills of the military bands and stunning cultural performances.

The night opened with a grand fireworks display before the arrival of the combined bands of the Royal Brunei Armed Forces, Royal Brunei Land Forces, Royal Brunei Police Force, Fire and Rescue Department and Prisons Department.

The tattoo continued with performances by each country, all staging unique formations and performances.

The highlight of the evening was the grand finale, during which all participants joined forces in the staging of a specially arranged musical score. The accompanying fireworks display ensured the event would remain etched in the memories of all who were present.

With such a spectacular performance, it is no wonder the BIT 2006 participants received a standing ovation at the end of the show. - Borneo Bulletin (1st August 2006)
