Sultan sends condolence message to Yudhoyono, death toll nearing 350

His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam has consented to send his condolences to Indonesian President, Dr Haji Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, following the tsunami in West Java.

In his message, His Majesty expressed his deep sadness over the loss of lives caused by the disaster, RTB reported.

On behalf of His Majesty's government and the people of Brunei, His Majesty sent his deepest sympathy and condolences to the president, the government and people of Indonesia and to the bereaved families of the victims.

The death toll from a tsunami that smashed into fishing villages and resorts on Indonesia's Java island has crossed 340, and over 200 more people are missing, officials said on Tuesday, Reuters reported.

At least four non-Indonesians were among the dead and 54,000 people were displaced, they said. - Borneo Bulletin (19th July 2006)
