His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam visited the Qatar Gas Plant on the first day of a two-day state visit to Qatar. The plant is located in the Ras Laffan Industrial City.
His Majesty began the day visiting Ras Laffan Industrial City, located about 45 kilometers from Doha. The Industrial City was built in 1993 when Ras Laffan Liquefied Natural Gas Plant was formed, as an early step to develop gas export industry in Qatar. Qatar is blessed because of its strategic geographical location, sitting in the middle of the biggest offshore gas field in the world.
His Majesty later watched a video presentation of Ras Laffan. Throughout the visit, His Majesty was accompanied by His Excellency Mr. Yousof Hussein Kamal, Minister of Finance, Economy and Industry of Qatar.
His Majesty later went on a bus tour around the Industrial City. The city covers a total area of 106 sq kilometer and is expected to expand to nearly 400 sq kilometer by 2010. Ras Laffan’s master plan will include the construction of 16 LNG trains, 7 Liquefied Natural Gas projects, 5 gas plants and 6 or 7 ethylene plants. Today, the city houses a Gas Plant, Liquefied Gas Plant, Helium Plant and the largest LNG exporting facility port in the world.
Ras Laffan Industrial City, like Brunei LNG, sees the need for the future of the world’s gas industry to be diversified. Though the production of this natural resources will last for several decades to come, a concerted efforts need to be taken so that this industry would continue to develop for the future generations.
