The maintenance, cleanliness and beauty of the environment is the responsibility of everyone in society, said Her Majesty Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Hjh Saleha as she delivered a titah yesterday at the "Cleanliness and Landscape Competition" and "Live Flower Show" at The Rizqun International Hotel, The Mall, Gadong. Her Majesty also consented to officiate the event, which was held in conjunction with His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam's 60th birthday celebrations.
Her Majesty said that a clean and beautiful environment far from environmental pollution permits people of the nation to enjoy a healthy and prosperous life. The spirit of love for the environment should be instilled among all members of society especially the youths, and adults should be good role models by maintaining the cleanliness of their surroundings and also public areas. Activities that generate support and participation from society to maintain the cleanliness and beauty of the country's environment should also be continued, Her Majesty said.
Also present at the event were Her Royal Highness Pengiran Isteri Azrinaz Mazhar, Her Royal Highness Princess Hjh Rashidah Sa'adatul Bolkiah, Her Royal Highness Princess Hjh Majeedah Nuurul Bolkiah, Her Royal Highness Princess Hjh Masna and Her Royal Highness Princess Hjh Noor Ehsani.
On hand to welcome Her Majesty and members of the royal family were organising committee members of the contest. The competition was jointly conducted by the Women's Institute and Department of Environment, Park and Recreation.
Her Majesty and members of the royal family watched a choir performance by students of Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah School. Also in the choir were Pengiran Anak Raheemah Sanaul Bolkiah and Pengiran Anak Hariisah Widadul Bolqiah. Students from St. George's School also performed a drama at the event.
After the performances, Her Majesty consented to present prizes to winners of the competition. A 'pesembah' was also presented to Her Majesty and HRH Pengiran Isteri Azrinaz Mazhar by co-chairman of the competition's working committee, Dayang Marhani binti Abdul Latif.
Her Majesty then viewed a photography exhibition that featured winners of the "Cleanliness and Landscape Competition" and toured an exhibition of flowers, ornamental plants and farm tools.
Meanwhile, Dayang Marhani in her welcoming remarks said, "This year's theme is 'A Green and Clean Environment Towards Developing A Sustainable Quality of Life'. Also a new category has been added this year, which is the Cleanliness and Landscape Category for Primary Schools in Kampong Ayer."
She also hoped that the competition would generate awareness among the public on the importance of society's role in maintaining and preserving the environment to ensure a good and noble culture and lifestyle.
A total of ten categories were contested in the competition. Winner of the "Individual House on Land" category was Hj Nordin bin Hj Ahmad from Kg Sabun, Muara, while winner of the "Individual Housing Scheme on Land" category was Pengiran Masle bin Pengiran Hj Abdul Hamid from Kg Perpindahan Lambak Kanan. In the "Individual House in Kg Ayer" category, Norhalifah binti Jalidin from Kg Burong Pinggai Ayer emerged champion while the "Individual Housing Scheme in Kg Ayer" category was won by Abdullah bin Mujun from Kg Bolkiah A Jetty 1.
Bagging the challenge trophy for the "Cleanliness and Landscape for Overall Village on Land" category was Kampong Lambak 'B' Mukim Berakas, while "Cleanliness and Landscape for Overall Village on Water" was won by Kampong Burong Pingai Ayer. In the primary schools category, Masin Primary School emerged champs while in the secondary school category, Berakas English School took the top spot. The surrounding petrol stations category was won by IBA Petrol Station & Trading, Lambak Kanan and the primary school in Kg Ayer category was won by Tanjung Kindana Primary School in Sungai Bunga.
