Surprise visit to schools

His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam yesterday consented to pay surprise visits to two educational institutions in the Brunei-Muara District.

The monarch's first stop was Sayyidina Abu Bakar Secondary School in Lambak Kanan.

Sultan embarked on a tour of the school, including the inspection of several classrooms and staff area.

During the tour, His Majesty was briefed by school principal Hjh Kamlah bte Hj Daud.

Sultan also mingled with some of 1,700 students studying at the school.

From Sayyidina Abu Bakar Secondary School, the monarch proceeded to the Berakas Sixth Form Centre (Pusat Tingkatan Enam Berakas) in Skim Tanah Kurnia Rakyat Jati, Lambak Kiri.

The centre, one of the newest schools in the Brunei-Muara District, opened in November 2005, and has since accepted students from lower sixth classes in SOAS and STPRI. Some 900 students are currently studying at the school.

Upon arrival at the centre, His Majesty was welcomed by deputy principals Awang Abdullah bin Awang Ismail and Hjh Noridah binti Abdullah.

Sultan then toured the school facilities, including physics laboratories, prayer hall, library, canteen, and staff room, while being briefed by principal Lee Yen Tshin.

During the tour, the monarch also talked with the teachers and students.

Meanwhile, His Majesty expressed his concern over the lack of a sports field for extra curricular activities at the centre. - Borneo Bulletin (10th Mar 2006)
