Sultan's granddaughters at story-telling competition

The final of the National Story-telling Competition was held yesterday at the Radio Television Brunei Auditorium.

RTB reported that the granddaughters of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, were awarded certificates of participation at the event. .

Pg Anak Raheemah Sanaul Bolkiah Bte Pg Maharaja Setia Laila Diraja Sahibul Irshad Pg Anak Hj Abdul Rahim and Pg Anak Harrisah Widadul Bolqiah Bte Pg Maharaja Setia Laila Diraja Sahibul Irshad Pg Anak Hj Abdul Rahim took part in the song presentation by the pupils from Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Foundation School to enliven the contest, RTB said.

The guest of honour was Pg Dato Paduka Hj Ismail, Permanent Secretary at the Prime Minister's office. Also present was the Acting Director of the Language and Literature Bureau, Dr Mataim Bin Bakar.

The annual competition was organised by the Language and Literature Bureau and this year's contest was conducted in collaboration with Radio Television Brunei.

The competition's main aim is to encourage reading among young children, to inspire the young minds through books and to encourage public speaking. The first competition was held in 1979. The stories told are local folklore.

Dyg Amal Saliha Bte Hj Hussin from Kiarong Primary School emerged as the champion with her folklore entitled "Puteri Duyung", RTB said.

Second place went to Dyg Siti Julaiha Bte Puasa of Mulaut Primary School with a story called "Beristerikan Barbalan", RTB reported.

In third place was Dyg Siti Khairunissa Bte Abdul Wahab of St Angela School, Seria with her story "Si Penangguk", RTB said. - Borneo Bulletin (10th July 2006)
