His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam delivered a Titah yesterday ordering nationwide cancellations of any celebratory events planned to usher in the New Year 2005.

This announcement was made in view of the tsunami disaster that claimed thousands of lives in Asia. It was also to observe the region's sadness and grief for the victims whose lives were lost in the disaster.

In a press release issued by the Prime Minister's Office, the nation will convey prayers to the victims by holding special mass prayers in all mosques and suraus today.

The "hajat" mass prayers will be followed by "Ghaib" mass prayers for the Muslim victims of the tragedy.

In view of this, the Empire Hotel and Country Club also announced cancellations of planned New Year's Eve activities today and tomorrow which included the Atrium Countdown, Anita Sarawak at The Empire Theatre, fireworks display, all dining specials at the restaurants, events at the Baze and Akademi Fantasia Meet The Fans session.

In a statement The Empire Hotel and Country Club said that it "joins the region in mourning the passing of the large number of victims that perished in the recent disaster and feels that celebrations are not in order at this time when prayers and support are much needed."

A full refund will be given to all guests who have purchased tickets to New Year's Eve proceedings at The Empire Hotel and Country Club.

Refunds will only be processed from January 3 to 15 to all guests who come forward to make their claims at the Hotel, after which, unclaimed funds will be donated along with the Hotel's donation in aid of the tsunami fund.

Two other establishments, the Sheraton Utama Hotel and Jerudong Polo & Country Club (JPCC), also announced the cancellation of New Year's Eve events.

Meanwhile Radio Television Brunei (RTB) also issued a statement announcing the postponement of the Bintang Radio final competition, which will instead take place at a date announced later. - Borneo Bulletin
